Schmelzer Named Junior Boys Division
National Overall Champion in Kneeboarding

(St. Bonifacius, MN) -- Eric Schmelzer, age 12, of St. Bonifacius won Overall First Place in the Junior Boys Division of the National Kneeboarding Championships held September 8 & 9.  Schmelzer is a 7th grader at Clearwater Middle School.
Schmelzer was the first competitor off the dock skiing at daybreak during both days of the competition which was held on a private ski lake near Chattanooga, Tennessee.  On day one, Schmelzer captured the first place in the Junior Boys slalom event. On day two, Schmelzer accumulated 550 points during the Junior Boys trick run.  The trick run is an event in which competitors are permitted two 20-second runs and are awarded points for specific routines such as side-slides, reverses, turns and rotations. Including both the slalom and the trick runs, Schmelzer’s combined score earned him the title of Junior Boys National Overall Champion.
Schmelzer is a member of the Northern Boarders kneeboarding club and conducts his practice runs on Lake Whaletail in Minnetrista.
In addition to Eric Schmelzer, two other Northern Boarders members competed in the event. Kurt Schmelzer of St. Bonifacius placed second in the Men’s III trick competition. Chris Dinse of Green Bay, Wisconsin placed first in the Mens I trick competition and second in the Mens I overall competition.
The championships were sponsored by the American Kneeboarding Association and were officially sanctioned by the American Waterski Association. For more information about the sport of kneeboarding, please visit, or
