Service Engine Light
« on: July 10, 2010, 09:33:56 PM »
Calling all mechanics!!  Occassionally my service engine light will come on and the boat will start to miss.  Not sure if I should continue to drive it when that happens.  If I shut down the engine and restart it will sometimes come on within 6 seconds and other times it doesn't come on and the boat runs great.  It never seems to come on when I'm bookin but when kneeboarding or slow pokin.

I do that too-lol.  Turning up the stereo helps cover up the warning buzzer too.  I wish I could advise here but I don"t know.  Tunne is pretty bright in the areas.

Got a code reader?  You recently changed the plugs, didn't you?  Go to the planet nautique forums too and post this question.

I haven't touched the engine since I bought the boat last spring.  Just been adding some injector cleaner and burning the spensive gas.  Maybe I'm running on 7 rather than 8.  I guess I'll buy a set of plugs.  That would be a pretty cheap fix..  I am having the local boat repair shop run the codes next week.  Problem is, there is a lot of boating time between now and next week.  Thanks for the lead Tuneupman!!

Look at the distributor cap.  If it is fuzzy change it out.  I just had to change mine out since I had developed a miss.

I didn't check the cap but I replaced the plugs. 6 of the 8 were wet.  I added a good cleaner from the guys at RecStation.  (They said to stay away from seafoam)
and now the miss is gone and the light is out.  Wondering if I should still have it hooked to a computer with the plugs being wet.  I worried the injector may be puking.  Any thoughts.  Where have you been Hawkeye.  Hopefully riding instead of typing ;D

Randy,

I haven't been riding much.  We are in the middle of moving to a biger place.

Why stay away from Seafoam?

I'm going in to buy some more of the recommended stuff.  I'll let you know what brand it is and will ask again about Seafoam.  He said something about it attracting water but I'll get the facts.  Congrats on the new house Hawkeye, now get out and ride cause school is starting soon and that means the end of summer.

I don't know if it was the additive or the new spark plugs but my boat runs great.  No more service engine light and no more low idle miss.  And that makes the surfing alot more fun after a good long day of kneeboarding.

The product is Mericruiser Quickcleen  About $15.00 for a bottle that treats 72 gallons.
